| Neil Smith was the President and General Manager of the New York Rangers at that time and the architect of Stanley Cup Winning team. He worked closely with the team’s four different owners-Paramount, Viacom, ITT and Cablevision-to rejuvenate the storied franchise both on and off the ice.
Fourteen years later, Neil uses that experience and his continued career in sports and business management to advise a broad range of audiences, including hockey lovers and corporations, on what it takes to both lead and build a winning team.
Neil is a leading analyst on Versus Network, the NHL Network, SNY, Hockey Night in Canada Radio and countless other electronic media outlets. He also written a business column for Conde Nast’s Portfolio.com and has been featured on the news/culture site The Daily Beast.
For hockey fans and sports enthusiasts, Smith can talk about the challenge of rebuilding a team that had not won a championship since 1940. Smith quickly assembled a group of seasoned veterans and emerging superstars, initiating the blockbuster trade for the legendary Mark Messier, who became the team’s captain and helped manage the team’s temperamental coach Mike Keenan. Under Smith’s leadership, the Rangers became an elite team and twice won the Presidents' Trophy emblematic of placing first in the entire league.
For businesses, Neil can talk about the challenge of working with a team that was negotiating a variety of challenges, inside and out. Smith joined the New York Rangers in 1989 as the youngest GM in its history with the goal of turning the Rangers into a modern brand that attracted a young and diverse fan base. Smith ultimately spearheaded a campaign to improve the team’s business performance and increase its fan base. He built and developed the team’s profitable minor league franchise, implemented a variety of branding initiatives including the unveiling of a new logo and completely re-organized MSG’s ticket prices and put in the highly lucrative rink side seats.
